Introduction

The Hammer & Pincers is a charming restaurant located in the picturesque village of Wymeswold, known for its cosy ambiance and commitment to quality, locally sourced cuisine. In a forward-thinking move, the restaurant decided to transition from gas to an all-electric operation to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance sustainability. However, this shift resulted in increased electricity bills, prompting the management to seek a renewable energy solution to offset these costs effectively.

Objectives:

  1. Offset Electricity Costs: Develop a solar energy system to mitigate rising electricity expenses due to the transition to electric-only operations.
  2. Optimise Roof Replacement: Integrate the solar array installation into the ongoing roof replacement project, maximising efficiency and functionality.
  3. Enhance Sustainability Efforts: Align with the restaurant's commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability.

Solution:

Site Survey and Analysis

Our team conducted a thorough site survey, which included:

  • Roof Condition Assessment: Evaluating the new roof to determine optimal positioning and orientation for solar panel installation.
  • G99 Compliance: Coordinating with the National Grid to fulfil the G99 application requirements for connecting the solar array to the grid.
  • Energy Needs Analysis: Assessing the restaurant's energy consumption patterns to tailor the solar solution effectively.

Proposed System

Based on the collected data, we designed a solar energy system that included:

  • Solar Panels: Installation of 33 Trina Solar Energy panels, each with a capacity of 505W, resulting in a total output of 16.67 kWp. The panels were arranged in an east-west split configuration to maximise efficiency throughout the day.
  • SolarEdge Optimisers: Each panel was equipped with SolarEdge optimisers, which provide numerous benefits for commercial applications, including:
  • Real-time Monitoring: This feature allows for continuous performance tracking of each panel, ensuring optimal functioning and quick identification of issues.
  • Increased Energy Harvesting: By optimising the output of individual panels, the system adapts to shading and other factors, maximising overall energy production.
  • Enhanced Safety Features: SolarEdge systems offer enhanced safety, including the ability to safely shut down the system in emergencies, thus protecting both property and people.

Expected Outcomes

Initially, our design projections indicated that the solar array would offset approximately 15% of The Hammer & Pincers' annual electricity bill. However, due to the effective monitoring capabilities provided by SolarEdge, the restaurant has successfully achieved a 19% offset to date. The real-time monitoring enabled the management to make informed decisions regarding electricity consumption, such as turning off unused appliances, further reducing costs.

Financial Performance

  • Payback Period: The project is projected to pay back its initial investment in 6.8 years.
  • Internal Rate of Return (IRR): The solar installation offers an impressive IRR of 20.32%.
  • Exporting Surplus Energy: The restaurant can now sell any surplus electricity generated back to the grid at a rate of £0.15 per kWh.

Installation Timeline

The installation was completed in just 5 days, allowing scaffolding to be removed promptly and ensuring restaurant operations resumed without extended disruption.

Results:

Since commissioning in August 2023, the solar array has achieved several significant milestones:

  • Energy Generation: The system has generated a total of 11.5 MWh of renewable energy.
  • CO2 Emissions Reduction: This production has prevented approximately 2,224.3 kg of CO2 emissions, equivalent to planting 135 trees.

Client Benefits

The Hammer & Pincers now enjoys numerous benefits from this project:

  • A significantly reduced electricity bill, coupled with the ability to better manage energy consumption using real-time data.
  • Increased property value through the addition of a renewable energy asset, enhancing the restaurant’s marketability.
  • A demonstrated commitment to sustainability, positioning the restaurant as a responsible leader in its community.

Client Feedback

The management at The Hammer & Pincers expressed great satisfaction with the project outcomes. The successful installation of the solar array not only addresses their energy needs but also aligns with their commitment to sustainability, further enhancing their brand identity.

Conclusion

The solar array project at The Hammer & Pincers showcases our ability to deliver customised renewable energy solutions that meet our clients’ specific needs while promoting environmental responsibility. Through careful planning and expert execution, we have helped the restaurant reduce operational costs, enhance sustainability, and add long-term value to their property.
